A major national union declared Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump its loser of the week Monday after his Las Vegas hotel refused to recognize a recent union election.
The AFL-CIO has attacked Trump throughout his campaign for a slew of policy disagreements. Its latest criticism involves a labor dispute his Las Vegas hotel is having with the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165. Hotel workers voted to unionize Dec. 7, but the hotel has refused to recognize the vote despite federal pressure.
“Donald Trump, after a hearing officer for the National Labor Relations Board recommended dismissal of objections to a union election at his signature Las Vegas hotel,” the AFL-CIO stated on its blog. “Trump’s management team still refuses to recognize the union vote.”
Trump International Hotel Las Vegas filed an objection Dec. 15 against the election, which would cover about 500 employees, and has since stood its ground. The National Labor Relations Board suggested hotel management drop its rejection after a hearing last week. In response, Local 226 invited Trump to meet Monday so they could begin negotiating a new contract.
“Employees recently won a union election and are inviting Donald Trump to the bargaining table to negotiate a first contract,” Local 226 stated. “Now, Trump Las Vegas employees are calling on the world-famous negotiator to make a deal.”
The union setup a bargaining table for hotel employees and Trump, and employees even planned to hold signs that read “Trump: Make America Great Again – Make a Deal with Us!” in reference to his campaign slogan. Neither Trump nor hotel management showed up. Trump hotel disputes the vote and the federal recommendation on the grounds the election wasn’t fair.
“The hearing officer’s recommendations erroneously disregarded the severe misconduct undertaken by Union agents, which clearly impacted an incredibly close election,” a hotel spokeswoman told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “We will continue our fight to ensure a fair election for our valued associates, many of whom vigorously oppose union representation.”
Local 226 has accused the hotel of unfair suspension of five employees in 2014 and restricting the right of workers. Feds also filed a complaint that includes allegations of physical assault, verbal abuse, intimidation and threats. The unions are affiliates of Unite Here which represents service workers internationally.
Unite Here has had a particular interest in Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his business empire. The business mogul made his fortune in real estate and the hotel industry, which employs many different types of service workers. Trump International Hotel & Tower Toronto voted last last year to join the union as well.
